Rotax Max mixed Evo and Pre-Evo parts

Before I spend on an Evo carb, pipe and ignition to bolt onto a pre-evo Max, I need to know if that's just a fancy way to waste money. Racers still argue whether the extra power sits in those three bits or in the cases and cylinder. If the jug already has a lot of hours, that argument doesn't even matter, you're buying speed the bore already gave away. A complete used Evo in decent shape from someone who quit usually leaves you a spare, the conversion doesn't.

The barrel is what decides whether this conversion is worth doing, not the crankcases. Fit the Evo carb, pipe and ignition as a set. The older short block is not the power limit, so leave it if the bearings and seals are healthy. A Pre-Evo cylinder that is still in spec can stay competitive. A tired cylinder still leaves you off the pace no matter which carb and pipe sit on it. The kit still gains without a new cylinder. Carb and ignition timing make the engine easier to place off a slow corner, which is where most club laps are made. Gear for that exit instead of a higher trap speed, or the extra disappears. A complete used Evo is not automatically the safer purchase, because that barrel is an unknown too. Conversion only looks foolish once your own cylinder is already finished. If you need a second full engine at the meeting, that is about spares, not proof the conversion is a waste.
