The next two sessions were mediocre, so new rubber went on to check pace. Fastest in the first timed session on new tyres at 44.849, and fastest in the second timed session at 44.935 on the second run with new tyres. Friday afternoon still looked solid. Starting on grid 1 for qualifying, disaster struck about 300 meters from the grid when the spark plug fouled. After pulling off and restarting, the session resumed. A few laps in came a black flag for hopping out and repairing on the side of the track. The penalty stood, qualifying time was deleted, and the first two heats started from the rear. The plan was to pass as many karts as possible in the heats without crashing, drawing on 42 years of racing when time trials were rare except at a State or National Championship.
