The axle on an older chassis is where that time usually hides. It flexes differently once you get some heat in it and the field starts walking away. Could the rest be in the tire pressures as they come up? Hard to tell if chasing a newer setup is worth it or if more practice would close it.

The last second is found by splitting the lap, not by guessing at the axle first. Sit down with a track map and mark every place you still leave time on the table as a driver: late on the brakes, early off them, a line that does not use all the track. Assign a realistic tenth to each and add them. That total is the driving theoretical. Only what remains after that is kart: axle stiffness once it is hot, pressures that climb through a run, or whether a newer chassis is even relevant.
Practice is what converts the driving number. A week that regularly puts you well over a hundred laps can take a couple of seconds out of a gap that has refused to move, even on used rubber and in the heat, because the markers finally stop moving. If the deficit is already there on the first flying lap, the axle has not had time to go soft, so more seat time is still the correct first move. Mid-stint fade after heat is the only window where an older axle or rising pressures deserve the spend. Until the map says the leftover time is mechanical, a newer setup just relocates the same mistakes.
