Having trouble with IAME Leopard ignition on a Comet kart?

Chasing a dead Leopard ignition is starting to look like the kind of bill that eats a whole race weekend before you even get on track. I can live with an old engine being fussy but I'm not buying a new stator if a ground or the kill circuit is what actually cooked it. Anyone running these on a Comet, do you check the cheap wiring first or is it usually the stator itself?
