Can I start karting on this Birel?

Methanol is a pain to store and it eats the wrong hose so I'm not sure this Birel is even the right first kart. Smarter to hang a pump-gas four stroke on it for learning, or does that just fight the chassis? Before I buy fuel I need to know if cracked welds and sloppy spindles are more urgent than the motor.

Before you buy fuel or hang a four-stroke, get the kart in good light and inspect every weld, especially at the spindle mounts and the rear bumper tubes. A crack there is more urgent than the motor because the chassis is what you are actually learning on, and extra weight from a pump-gas engine will load those joints harder. That one look rules out the expensive guess of buying methanol or a donor engine for a frame that is already done. If the frame is sound you can decide on fuel later. If it's not, no hose and no motor swap will make this a first kart worth using. Most of the fancier fuel and engine theories can wait until that basic thing is confirmed.
